Prenatal massage, also known as pregnancy massage, is a special kind of manual manipulation therapy specifically geared toward pregnant women. This form of massage uses many of the techniques of Swedish massage therapy and adapts them to the stress and strains of a pregnant woman’s body.
At Focus on Mind and Body, we provide a tailored pre-natal massage using a special pillow that ensures maximum comfort for both mum and their precious extra passenger. Circulation to the body is stimulated by using flowing strokes to ease the tension whilst relaxing both the mind and the body.
Using the pregnancy pillow will ensure that you are properly supported and positioned during the massage, as laying on the back can put enormous pressure on the abdomen and, consequently, inhibit blood circulation.
The pressure of the massage will vary from gentle, soothing, and light to a deeper pressure in areas of need such as the neck, shoulders, back, legs, and feet (far away from the stomach). If you have any health concerns, such as nausea, or morning sickness, your therapist will avoid certain techniques, such as rocking or friction.
The benefits of massage can improve overall prenatal health for many pregnant women. Along with the guidance and advice of a prenatal care provider, massage therapy can be incorporated into routine prenatal care as an emotional and physical health supplement shown to improve pregnancy outcomes and maternal health.
